Internet and
Computer Safety
- There are
hundreds of ways that computers record everything you do,
including using the Internet.
- If you
are in danger, please try to use a safer computer that someone you
fear doesn’t have access to, or to which such a person could gain
access.
- It might
be safer to use a computer in a public library, a community
technology center, or a trusted friend’s home.
- If you
think your activities are being monitored, they probably are.
Abusive people are very controlling and want to know your every
move. You don’t need to be a computer wiz or have special skills
to monitor someone’s computer activities – anyone can do it.
There are many ways to monitor.
- Computers
can provide a lot off information about what you look at on the
Internet, the contacts you make, the mail you send, and other
activities in which you may engage. It is not possible to delete
completely or clear computer “footprints” completely.
- If you
think you may be monitored on your home computer, you might
consider avoiding Internet use or ‘safer’ Internet surfing. For
example, if you are planning to flee, don’t contact shelters in
your area on the Internet. If you are planning to flee to Kansas
City, don’t search classified job ads, apartments, bus tickets,
etc., on your home computer. Use a safer device to research an
escape plan.
If you are
in immediate danger, call 911.
